Nadine Sutherland Receives Key to Florida City! Is Jamaica Finally Giving Its Female Music Legends the Recognition They Deserve?

Jamaican reggae and dancehall icon Nadine Sutherland has received one of Florida’s prestigious civic honors — the Key to the City of Tamarac! The celebrated singer was recognized on Saturday, October 10, 2026, during the second annual Red Gala at the Tamarac Community Center. The award celebrates her outstanding contributions to Jamaican music and her decades of influence on Caribbean culture, both at home and across the international diaspora.

The ceremony, associated with Tamarac Vice Mayor Marlon D. Bolton, marked another significant milestone in Sutherland’s remarkable career. From winning the Tastee Talent Contest as a child to becoming the first artiste signed by Bob Marley to his legendary Tuff Gong label, Sutherland has spent more than four decades helping to shape Jamaica’s musical identity. Her timeless recordings, including the dancehall classic “Action” with Terror Fabulous, have earned her a special place in reggae and dancehall history.

Speaking about the recognition, Sutherland expressed gratitude for having remained committed to her musical journey despite the challenges she encountered along the way. The occasion was especially emotional because both of her parents are alive to witness this moment in her career. The gala also supported cancer awareness initiatives while celebrating the important cultural contributions of Caribbean entertainers to South Florida’s diverse communities.

But here’s the question SupaJamz wants to ask: Why does it sometimes take international recognition for Caribbean music pioneers to receive the appreciation they deserve? Has Jamaica done enough to celebrate legendary female entertainers like Nadine Sutherland while they are still here to enjoy their flowers? Share your thoughts and help us congratulate this incredible Jamaican music icon!
